The rod inside the shifter in pre-AUs goes down when you press the button, in the BAs, the rod gets pulled upwards, and its all plastic.

If you do a search there are a few threads on this mod. Its not an easy mod, you need to fit the shifter, then route the shifter cable (E-series use direct linkages instead of cable), make a bracket up to attach the cable to the trans and then adjust it until all gears work. If you want to get the sequential shifting working then you will need an electronic conversion box worth around $200.
