Im planning on buying an AU V8, either XR or fairmont ghia, and I plan to get an LPG conversion. Is there anything I should look out for when getting the gas conversion, and how much is it likely to cost?
Also, what sort of gas setup do you guys recommend? I haven't run a car on gas before so i'm trying to find out all I can before I start spending any money. Cheers |

I have an AU1 XR8 on LPG. Normal cost would have been around $3500 - the largest price difference over a 5 is the computer (mine cost $2700, but I already had a tank and a few bits and pieces that cost me $700). For a V8 the LPG computer is around $1400, for a 6, it's around $600. Most other components are the same price or thereabouts.
Biggest thing to watch out for - you will need good plugs, so if they haven't been replaced yet, factor in $200 for plugs. Get the spring clips for the airbox from Ford and supply them to the fitter at the time of installation. When tuning, there is the risk of a backfire, which in my case meant the air box was blown into about 100 bits (issue caused by bad plugs). Here's a couple of shots of my setup - sorry not sure of brand, but Vialle sounds about right. GRA also make a good, well tried setup for dual fuel (or straight gas). I lost 6rwkw on LPG (142rwkw on petrol, 136rwkw LPG), but to be honest, I can't even feel the difference on the road. It still pulls hard (it is a V8, of course). Thanks for the pics. Seems to be a bit more expensive than I had hoped though. BTW, only just realised there was a dedicated thread for LPG.
Cheers |

Dman, didnt realise they price of conversions had sky rocketed that much. suppose supply and demand dictate it.

Then there's Sequential Vapour Injection .... add another $1000 onto the conversion ... better economy and more power than the older style setups.
It's only worth doing this though if you need traction control ... and do MANY MANY miles. It's a big outlay initially ... but in the long run it's worth it. My 1700km drive the other night for work only cost me $130 in fuel (inc. drinks and snacks) ... mind you though the EGAS utes aren't the best economy-wise ... Iw as returning 12-13L/100km for the entire trip.
