Ok so I have a EA GL '90 sitting in the paddock with 406,000km on it and still going strong, which I am considering fixing up and making road worthy, however it would need a manual conversion (I'm picky and the auto trans in it is near rooted anyway) and new chassis/panels, plus new head gasket, spark plugs, and god knows what else once I got into it.
Meanwhile, a Fairmont SPV '91 with 275,000km on it has just been listed at a seemingly steal ($1750) on an auction site I watch. From what I can gather it is the same engine and very similar body to the EA I have sitting in the paddock, but I was hoping that someone could enlighten me to the differences between these two models? Exactly, it stands for Special Preparations Vehicle, and I have no idea what it means. The main thing I'm interested in here is to what extent parts are interchangeable between the two models above.

Everything is interchangable - same floor plan and similar body - cosmetic differences

well if it's an ex-gov vehicle, and is nearly 20 years old, i'd say everything to be honest. I'm not trying to be smart.. It just depends how it's been cared for, service history is everything.

I would've assumed ex-gov would indicate that it had been well serviced for at lest some of its life. Where would you say rust is most common?

Get the car on a hoist and look at the sills.
Rust is in the usual spot for old cars - bottom of the inside of the doors, around the front or rear window, most common is any low area around rear 1/4 panels and Front Gaurds and left and right sills.

some government cars are well cared for, some are trashed, it all depends on which part of the gov used them, where they were stationed etc. |

doing a google search it looks like SPV was a special release by strap ford
by the looks of it they were an american co that attempted to break into the au market looks like they broke into the market with their racing products have found plenty on the net about the american side of them but nothing about what they did with the eb though Jason
