Hi guys!
I've come here for some advice from the owners and enthusiasts ![]() I have about $5000 up my sleeve, (but I only want to spend around $4500 if I can) and from what I've researched, the EF/EL seems to fit the bill. Right now, I'm looking at getting an EF/EL GLi - but I'm not sure how much to pay for a decent one with around 200,000km on the clock. I'm looking to only spend $4500, but should I spend the full 5k to get the best car I can? These are the real questions I need help with. Also, the only problem I know of concerning the E series is that the head gaskets tend to be an issue. Are there any more issues the car is known for? So can anyone help me out? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys! Darius. |

Welcome! The EF/EL Falcons are great cars.
If you get an auto, check that it shifts smoothly. If it doesn't, avoid. I'd also recommend servicing the auto when you buy it. Head gaskets can be a problem. When you check out a car, see if the head gasket's been done before. If it hasn't, if the car has around 200,000kms, I'd expect the current head gasket would be in the final stages of it's life. Also check things like heater and aircon to make sure they work properly.

i can't speak for EF/EL specifics, but definitely check the head gasket history and the tranny if its auto. 200,000 is the mark for water pumps and oil pumps and such as well i think. i'd want to get a proper service done on a 200,000km car unless it had a well documented history.

Depending on what state you are in, you can very easily find an EL Futura or Fairmont for the money you're talking. You just have to be patient, know what you're looking at, and not be deterred by ambitious selling prices of dreamer sellers.

Spend the whole lot if you find a nice looking one with 150,000k or so that runs smoothly. thought $500 is not going to make a huge diff in the quality of the car you will get. you can normally talk most ppl down well over the $500 :P
