Default AU3 XR8 running on unleaded - damage???

I hope the wealth of knowledge here would be able to help me.

If an XR8 has been running on normal unleaded for a while (several thousand klm's) what damage would I expect it to have or to show in the future???

Thank you in advance.

Ummm This is a car that is designed to run on unleaded ??
If it's the ron rating your refering to as in std unleaded if it hasn't been pinging under load or on hot days then it should be right.

My 220 says premium only. On the inside of the petty lid. When i went to chiptorque they said it was vital to run it.

There are stickers located under the bonnet and fuel cap stating they must be run on 'premium' unleaded only.

Howesy, thank you for the reply, I have conflicting information and thought I would ask here to get some clarification.

The car clearly says by sticker under bonnet to run premium unleaded............I have been informed the car has been running on normal unleaded for 20k, so yes the RON would be very different............will this do any damage to the engine short / long term???

Long term if its still keep running it on it for, thats what is was told by chiptorque, i was also told not to run your car on even fuel like 7 11 fuel, only bp ultimate or shell fuel.

JUST WHAT I WAS RECOMMENDED TO DO LOL.

Engines with high compression or timing advance requiring premium (95 RON) or 98 usually have one or more knock sensors to allow the ECU to retard timing when ULP (91 RON) is used. If the knock sensor is faulty then engine damage will occur. If the sensor is working properly it will normally retard the timing before you hear any pinging. After 20,000km the engine performance would be pretty dozy due to the ECU learning a timing map for 91 RON.

Fill it up with PULP or 98, reset the PCM, and cross your fingers!

The Windsors aren't fitted with knock sensors, trust me I know. The worst that can happen from running it on standard unleaded is that detonation will cause piston failure. The 220 engine is a pretty highly strung thing when it comes to fuel, some have even been known to ping on 95ron and demand 98ron. 200's weren't as bad for this (lower compression) but still aren't a happy creature on 91ron fuel.

car manufacturers have to account for poor quality fuel which is why they say run 95 octane and why they tune the engines the way they do which is the reason the edit works so well. It can be tuned more precisely to the fuel not accounting for poor quality instances.
The lower the octane the more volatile the fuel and more prone to pre ignite. If the previous owner says it never pinged there shouldn't be a problem with the generic factory tune however if they say it has been pinging its off then yes that can cause damage to you engine in the long term but if it runs cool and has all the go it should and runs quiet then just keep feeding it the 95 ron and remember its cheaper to put the good stuff in than to have to put a booster in later.

By the way my son has a 220 with over 200,000 on the clock and he often has to put std unleaded in when out in the bush and his car is still going strong he just puts 95 in when avail. (most of the time) (runs generic ford tune)

Yeah my 220 pinged its head off at about 3500rpm on 95 (only used one tank), have used BP ultimate ever since and never had any problems

220s run heaps of timing higher in the rev range so ping there head off on low octane. You can get away with standard fuel in the short term if you keep the revs & load down but it's not worth the risk.

I haven't read all the posts so this may or may not have been said.

But i heard that problems may occur running normal unleaded because its something to do with the Fuel Injection? Like Premium 98 just runs through it smoother and cleaner while Normal Unleaded gets clogged...

I have no idea how it works but thats basically what others have said to me .. ha ha
