hey all, i am putting an AU engine in my ea and am going to fit the AU thermostat housing but see the problem is that the ea-ef have a temp sensor and a coolant temp sensor in the housing, where the AU one has nothing.
i know there is the sonsor at the back of the head but thats just for the gauge is it not? see the ea-ef have one for just the gauge(that has one wire) and one that goes back to the ecu(has 2 wires). so where is the coolant temp sensor on the AU? any help would be great.. cheers shaun

spot on that sensor is just water level on the up series models, such as fairmonts and XRs the sensor at the back of the head is the head temperature sensor, which is teh ecu sensors, the ecu generates a signal for the gauge. gauge doesn work = thermos dont work = overheating what wiring loom and ecu are you going to use? more so what dash are u using. id just fit and ef thermostat housing and fit and ea dash sensor, and the rest use the au loom.

I'll correct my earlier post, as I didn't properly read the question. Serves me right! LOL!
The coolant level sensor was on the S1 header tank/coolant tank/reservoir. The other guys are correct in saying the coolant temp sensor is behind the engine at the firewall. Cheers, GK

hi motojazz
this is the AU section and a 3 year old thread at that. you'll have better luck posting in the BA section in your very own new thread!

B-series is in a similar position .. as the head is a bit bigger ... the sensor is tucked around a bit further.

Maybe. Get a sparky to have a look for you; the AUs do occasionally break those sensors.
*edit* Hang on, which warning light? Temp or coolant level?

Lol its ok I found the problem and here is the fix;
Between the battery and the suspension tower you will find a round plug, This plug is used on Series 1 AU for the coolant level sensor! Ford used a loop plug to cancel this but the earth goes bad so it needs to be upgraded! Find the Yellow with Red stripe wire and make a connection to the Negative on the Battery. On the series 3 this was deleted! If you want to a Series 1 bottle with sensor can be connected if you can be bothered .... ![]() ![]() ![]() |

How do I unclip, undo the 2 wires on the sensor. I can hardly reach it behind the head.
Can I short it out to check if fans come on? My problem is I overheat at lights and steep hills. Both fans come on at start with A/C on. (thanks someone) |

Sounds like you may have a pump falure. sometimes the impelor can rust its vains down to blades just like a vegi chopper. this can happen when water is used in place of coolent! I have had this happen on a v6 I once had! Ok when moving but overheats easy for no good reason. Oh and check your thurmostat it could be stuck , if so replace it! Ok the sensor in the header tank is a coolent level sensor. The sensor in the back of the head is the temprator sensor, and the ecm sends the relivant info to the instraments. So if you need 2 the easy way is to use the ef thermostat housing to add the second sensor |
