Well, I was pretty bored today so thought Id get around to modifying the original airbox in the car. When I had the car dyno'd I was told that just by adding another inlet pipe people are getting a 5kw gain, so thought stuff it why not. So, headed down to the local hardware store, they didnt have what i wanted (wanted one of those bits that goes on the end of a downpipe) so settled for this instead:
![]() Its just a square to circle thingo, I presume for some sort of guttering application. That and the piece of pipe that fits snug inside cost me a whopping $3.50, as I got the offcut for free. Airbox out: ![]() Hole cut: ![]() Why dont I ever bloody measure stuff?: ![]() No match for black silicone, and some black paint: ![]() Some of you will see a big boo boo here: ![]() I put it to far up, and the air filter wouldnt fit in, though, with just a bit of force I got joy and the top went back on perfectly; ![]() Im a bit peeved that I couldnt get to the bottom bolt to do it up but it is bloody sturdy so I suppose its ok. Also very annoyed that once the bottom bit was back in one of the clips came out, Ill take the box out next weekend and clip that one back on, pain in the ***. Result: ![]() Oh yeah and I got a bit wild with the stanley knife so did my own version of the widemouth ticky snorkel: ![]() Needs paint, Ill do that another time, as it was starting to rain. All up, for $3.50, im stoked with the gains, fuel consumption is definately better and theres an awesome noise at WOT, along with a lot more action down low. Very worthwhile mod for an hours work. --Dave |

Not a bad idea mate. What about a pod filter inside the air box instead of your panel filter ?

As far as I know they dont fit at all insiude the AU boxes, I remember putting one in the box of my EF, but there was a lot of bending, force and swearing. The K&N panel filter in there now does a good enough job anyway I think.

And I guess that if I was going to buy a $120 K&N pod filter I would've got the fiberglass out and done it properly. This is a cheap fix I suppose for bored people who want a bit more action.

Definately did go better, I think you're right xr-chief the xr's have more air flow but I think it would benefit a non-xr front aswell.

The "widemouth" snorkels tube Body is wider not just the opening.

You can do it this way without the silicone - except for the mismeasure
![]() ....and you can get at the bottom bolt... http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11262681 |

Sure, nothing wrong with yours. At least you're not sitting on your hands wondering
![]() For others considering it, you wanted it closer to the headlight (on mine that is) it's only a matter of making the cut a bit longer on the 90mm front pipe. |

It's the mesh cap that holds it in place so if the pipe was longer it would just flop about (said the actress to the Bishop). I guess the way to overcome that would be to cut a piece of 90mm poly pipe joiner and slide it over the existing pipe to hold it in place against the airbox. (Not meaning to hijack your thread Davo but I think that the info should be as accurate as poss for those reading and maybe contemplating using it) |
