Message Display Centre - Buttons

Not sure if I'm explaining this correctly.
But I've noticed the buttons on the left half aren't illuminating anymore was curious whats generally required to fix the problem.
Is it generally just a globe which is gone or something along those lines?
Got a friend who said he'd be able to take a look for me, but thought I'd ask on here before.
The screen is perfect though. It's just those buttons.
