Default EL fairmont.. weird power steering

when i leave the car overnight with the steering wheel anywhere to the right, the power steering will not work unless i give the engine a bit of a boot in neutral. It starts working when the motor hits about 2000rpm (a spurting sound from the pump + then a whirring noise). After that, the power steering works normally and the whirring noise vanishes. Is something wrong with the power steering or does it need new fluid/etc? Was worried that it mite die when i'm driving someday...

so if you have the wheel turned to the left it works properly?

is it leaking from anywhere?

I would have guessed it was the pump if not for that "wheel turned to the right' thing :S

id still say its the pump. usually the 'whirring' sound gives it away.

it leaked from the pump cap a while ago (think the mechanic overfilled it).. but has never leaked visibly ever since. The whirring sound only happens on a cold start in the morning with the steering wheel anywhere to the right (after "unsticking" it with a few revs). But all is good when the whirring soon goes away, and there is no loss of power steering or steering feel..

bearings in the pump itself may not be the best anymore.
