hmm... my bro just converted from 4 speed auto to 5 speed manual in his EL xr6... now i've got his BTR 4 speed auto....
what can i get done to it... maybe strangthen it ? can i get stronger 'bands' ? mm shiftkit would set me back .. but wouldn't it be minus $400(generally?) labour if i just hand the box in.. cause other then pulling the box apart there isn't much labour.. compared to pulling it out of a car and putting it back in... and get a 2500rpm stallie converter(yes, i know.. i know.. all depends on where your power is.. or torque or whatever...) .. but 2500rpm stallie is what _I_ want ;) any other ideas? phanks |

Depeds on what you want from the box mate.
I have a stage 2 shift kit in mine that only cost me $250 installed but have since decided that im going to get the box heavily strengthed as i have future plans for the car. Kewish automatics in dandenong will build my box capable of 240rwkw for $1600 im going to get it done in a few months. Also i believe they can do a valve body mod for these autos for $550 which i thinik rates the auto to about 150rwkw?? Jarrod |

i want the box to be stronge.. mainly... so i won't have any problems with a shiftkit being harsh on the gear box, 'n a stallie
are you able to tell me what's with the 'stage 2' .. like what's it mean.. does it mean it's harsh when changing or what? |

the box stock can handle 150rwkw, the price however for the 240rwkw build isnt too bad.
deffinately nice for something in the middle budget.

$2400 should get you a good box with stall that should hold up to a fair whack of punishment.

as much as i'd love to save $2400 .. not practical at the moment cause the money seem's to dissappear(petrol) :P... that's why i want to do it in 'stages' , so maybe the stallie first.. or w/ever
this i want to be a short to mid term 'project' .. as my auto has slipped a few times when i go to boot it.. so this is something I want to do definately... an get the g/box strong and with the 'goodies' in it :P ![]() |

Enough to chirp the wheels when it changes into second and make things very interesting in the wet. Its a way of prolonging your auto a while as there is less time taken for change which means less heat (which is what kills autos)

Bert Kewish build quite a good auto. Although I absolutely hate C4's now. Too many $ for very little return IMO. Dave @ Bert Kewish built up a C4 for my XB. It was the longest time frame a C4 had stayed in the car. Just a tad over 5000k's @ nothing less than 280rwkw. We played with the tune, peak was 306rwkw. Dave said himself that with the power level the XB had a C4 wasn't a wise option.
I highly recommend Dave. He's a no BS kind of guy. Don't use him if you don't like being told reality. He tells how it is. [edit]Dave also built a box for my brother inlaws Gen 3 VY SS. It was nothing short of awesome. The car had around 260-280rwkw.

i have just got my btr rebuilt with the clearances reduced, valve body opened up, new bands, all the little plastic pieces of crap removed and a 2500rpm stall done. and i have to say if i had my time again i wouldn't hesitate to go to a manual. so if you want you can by mine off me.

way to rub it in! i suppose it's a good way to loose 2 grand. i no this might sound strage or absolutly stupid but the only reason i stayed with the auto was cause my engine got balanced with the drive plate (don't know if it would make a difference) and a mate at work (11sec 350 chev auto) told me to stick with the auto. should of gone manual! pete j |

mate i'd probably consider a 5 speed but i only went for my auto license and hell if i'm gonna sit the comp test and then sit the practical test in a manual !!
so i've got 3 years... and anyways manual would get bordom after a while... so here's my chance to get a gear box to the specifications i want ![]() besides, a strong autobox with shiftkit, stronger bands, 2500 histall.... mm and a spooled diff would be good.. especially in the wet :P |

Well there you go, you learn something new everyday! I didn't know you had to go for a manual licence to drive a manual. Is it the same in SA? Oh well if you only have 3yrs to wait, the tricked auto will proberbly last long enough. |

well if you go for a manual license in victoria ... you can drive both a manual and an auto car...
but... if you go for an auto license.. you can only drive an auto car, so if i was to get my manual license i would have to sit the test(s) again :( |
