On the cruise on the weekend I noticed that my trans tunnel gets really, really hot. Some dildo put chequerplate on the gearstick surround and later in the night it was too hot to touch. I think I boiled a red bull that was in my centre console as well.
Any ideas why this could be and how to fix it? Being a Tremec box shouldnt make a difference should it? Its way hotter than my 4wd trans tunnel and that has no carpet. I had to drive around with the windows and sunroof open all night to let the heat out of the car.

Hmmm..
Perhaps the airflow is somehow different compared to the T5. Either that or there is no heat shielding put in when the conversion was done. Thats going to be one PIA to put in. Is it just around the gearbox?

Yep, its just around the gearbox as far as I can tell. Is there usually heat shielding under the car?

Um im not positive, but I guess they might.
This might be a stupid idea, but could you somehow fix up some cooling pipes just to see if it makes a difference.... You put a new exhaust on didn't you? Was it hot before aswell?

I didnt drive it for as long before the exhaust was done. I only had the pipe from the cat back done with 3 inch rather than 4.
I jack up Mum's EA tonight and check for heat shielding. Then steal it :P

mmm well there is no heatshield between a gearbox and a standard e series so i duno what ur on about there... only heatshield i can think of is that foamy stuck to the firewall that stops around th ebellhousing area before the gearbox....
i rekon your heat problem is the dump pupe from ya turbo cookin ya drivers side =P is tghe drivers side of the tre trans tunnel hotter than the passenger side hadve you got under there and toutched the gearbox to see how hot it is after uve taken the car for a decent drive? unless its farrken hot i dont think it would be able to heat the inside of ur car from the gearbox =P the rubber bits around the gear selecter would melt and sheet... |

I will bet on it is the heat from your dump pipe and Cat that are doing it. Also there should be a rubber boot that goes over the shifter and screws to the trans tunnel. If it is not there will let in a truck load of heat.

is the heat actually originating from the exhaust or the trans?
My guess would be exhaust, especially being a turbo.... Try some exhaust insulating wrap to keep a majority of the heat in the exhaust system, or make up some heat sheilding for the trans tunnel.

Yer i doubt your trans could get hot enough to heat the cabin as much as you've described. + 1 vote for the exhaust being the issue. As mentioned, that heat wrap stuff would be a good place to start, even if it's not the issue it's definately a good idea anyway....

None of my other turbo falcons have gotten this hot.
I think I might be missing the bit that screws into the trans tunnel where the shifter comes through. Ill get one on the weekend. It still gets unusually hot though we are talking hot enough for the chequerplate metal on the centre console to burn me after a longish drive.

is your exhaust stainless steel? as that radiates more heat than mild steel.
I also remember that you removed the bonnet with all the vents in it... does the new one have any vents at all? As the vents were there to allow the heat out of the engine bay. If they are gone, the only place for the heat to go is under the car.

A lot of people think that bonnet vents are to let cold air in, but it is exaclty the opposite.
Hot air rises, so natually cut a hole in the bonnet to let it out... I reckon some EB GT style vents in the bonnet wouldn't look out of place, and they would actually be functional. EDIT - lol, You could always run it on methanol ;)

That doesnt explain why my last 2 turbo falcons were not hotter than normal. Neither had vents.

Weren't you saying before that your exhuast manifold was glowing red even after normal driving?? Did you ever get that soughted out?? If not then perhaps it's a timing issue causing your exhuast to heat excessively including dump pipe??

I fixed that.
Ill rip everything out and have a look on the weekend once I get the car back. If that doesnt help and bigger intercooler and turbo will fix it in a few weeks ![]()

I reckon the trans tunnel is sexually attracted to the Tremec. Hence the heat. True story.

Did you get the cat checked out? if it is blocked or collapsing the heat radiated from that will be amazing... |
