Default Reccomend me an ISP!

Following on form my wireless thread, just wondering what ISP you guys are with?

Im in Geelong, and right now I am with Chariot, its 12GB a month on a 512k connection for $49.00. Its been pretty good other than some very very annoying, and rather frequent drop outs.

It could be the crappy free modem we got (NB3), or the phone line itself (house is a bit dodge). Either way Ive been ****ed off some many times that enough is enough.

I wondering what the best bang for ya buck is. Any reccomendations would be great. Dont mind going with smaller companys if the deal is good enough.

Bare minimum would be a 512k line, as I dont want to go backwards. As for download, min again woul dbe around the 10GB per month.

Cheers! :

Im with Chariot on their 1500/256 40GB download plan...$69 per month!

I havent had any problems at all...

I think you will get a much better idea by visiting the forums @ http://whirlpool.net.au

There is also a search there ("Broadband Choice") where you input what you want, how much for etc and it lists them all.

Im with iPRIMUS on the 512k/128k and 5GB download plan for $49 per month. $10 extra if you want 10GB.

I wouldn't say it was the smoothest change over from Telstra and the customer support is somewhat to be desired espcially if you call after 5pm, but the quality of the internet ie. no drop outs, transfer rates etc.. has been excellent and its cheaper then Bigpond.

TPG here. 18 gigs at ADSL2+ speeds for 49.95 a month.

I've clocked downloads of 1meg-byte per sec numerous times.

Stupid Q number 1, is ADSL2+ worth the extra over normal ADSL?

Prob the way you have your system set up........

I am with AAPT with 2 computers on a network
D-Link DSL302G Generation II Modem (Which was free)
D-Link DI524 Router

Never ever had a problem - both computers run 512k ram

Together the computers would be the same as one computer on 24/7 - both computers running 6pm to 12 every night

AND THE BONUS WITH AAPT - No 12 month lock in contract - you dont like them you move

We have 3 computers on a network, with the same modem and router as yourself and have the problem I posted above.

According to AAPT, our system is fine. All computers are current with spyware programs and anti-virus programs.

Meeeeeeeehh - not happy - no lock in contract

Doubt an ISP could tell you if your phone line is stuffed - if the modem is faulty - twisted wires - Dodgy connectors - dust in computers etc etc without visiting your home

Anyway I am happy with AAPT and have had no issues for 12 months so there must be something different between your set up and mine

THE END.................. :

Look,if you want quality and no drop outs go with telstra cable 10g unlimited plan. Can not go wrong. I download 50-70g a month. once i am capped i stillget dlrates of 80kbps. it is $79 per month but it easily beats any other isp out there. ADSL and ADSL2 runs on obsolete tech. If it rains you lose, it it doesnt rain it still drops out, and in the end you lose by the low 12g dl and the slow speeds they offer.

Well in that case I'm being pooed on.

We're paying 75 a month for 12 peak and 24 off peak.

I must look into that.

But Optus has always been good for us, except when the RCA modem started becoming crap and they were replaced by a Motorola. Also, a component in the Optus box on the side of our house needed replacing, and Optus were prompt in coming out to fix it.

So I've been happy with them.

Telstra/Optus Cable has fairly limited coverage... I'm pretty sure Geelong wouldn't have it..
Also with Cable your speed is affected by how many people are online, since it is a "shared" connection basically and cable is just as susceptable to dropouts as ADSL if not more (just ask my mate whos on Telstra cable!)...

I'm more than happy with my 15mbit 20GB DSL2+ connection on internode, I have only ever had drop outs when I had that horrible DSL-302G modem.

But then only Exetel have DSL2 coverage in Geelong anyway, any other ISP will be using telstra hardware and therefore limited to 1500kbps

With Optus, once I got a decent modem (Back in 2001 they gave out **** modems) and they repaired a busted mechanism in the box on the powerpole, there have been no problems. And I find that my speed doesn't ever slow down all that much.

I'm in Glen Waverley.

Yes it is. But you'll find that it isnt that much more in cost... if any.

ADSL max downlink is 1500Mb (on the market, although the technology itself can go up to 8Mb.
ADSL2+ max downlink is 22/24Mb although this depends on your distance from the exchange. The further you are, the lower the speeds.

Downside is that ADSL2+ isnt available everywhere. Only where the providers have upgraded the exchanges with DSLAMs.

We only recently got broadband...through AAPT.
512/128, 12Gb, free modem, no contract.

We combined our home phone and pay:
$69/month ($30 line rental + $29 for up to $50 worth of calls. You can also pay $49 for calls for up to $120 worth).
$39/month for broadband.
We will also bring our mobiles across to them for $5 each per month with $20 of included calls.
So, $120/month with home, 2 mobiles and broadband.

We were with Telstra paying $60-80/month + dialup (which was free anyway except for local call cost when dialing in) + $20/month for mobiles.

Been happy so far, and their technical support seems to be very good.

Go with Veridas - they are quite cheap and compeditive at the moment :
Why I hear you ask - my ISP was a wholesaler thru Veridas and now I can only access the net at work :
Clicky on the link and have a read ==>Veridas
And now I am in the middle of a churn to AAPT : :
